The da Vinci Surgical System leverages state-of-the-art robotic technology to maximize benefits during surgery for both the patient and the surgeon.  The surgeon’s hand movements are translated into precise movements of fully wristed micro-instruments within the operative field. The surgeon's magnified, three-dimensional view further enables the performance of exceptionally accurate dissection and reconstruction of delicate structures, all through a few small incisions.  This represents a major advance over standard laparoscopy, which is limited both by the two-dimensional perspective and the long, straight instruments with fixed tips.

It is important to note that The da Vinci System does not make any decisions on its own and can not move without direct input from a console-certified surgeon.  A more accurate term for "robotic surgery " is "computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery" clearly identifying the role the da Vinci System serves as an adjunct to laparoscopy, performing precise maneuvers under real-time guidance from the surgeon.

The da Vinci System has taken surgery to a new level for both surgeon and patient. The surgeon benefits from a comfortable, seated position with unprecedented visualization, and complete freedom of instrument movements. The patient benefits from the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, decreased blood loss, shorter hospitalization, faster return to normal activity, and minimal scarring.  Dr. Brian Golden has demonstrated improved preservation during da Vinci prostatectomy of the delicate structures responsible for erectile function and urinary continence, due to the advantages provided by da Vinci surgery.

In this ABC News interview, Dr. Golden discusses the advantages of robotic surgery: Dr. Brian Golden Interviewed about da Vinci Surgery Advantages

The key components of the da Vinci System are described briefly in this video: da Vinci SHD System Overview

To grasp the precision of da Vinci Surgery, one must see it in action.  How big do you think the origami pterodactyl is?  Wait until the very end of the video!:  da Vinci Origami

These components facilitate the surgical precision seen in the origami video above.

Miniaturized Instruments

Complete array of instument tips makes possible every imaginable surgical maneuver, including some not possible during open surgery, and many not possible during standard laparosopic surgery.

All of the surgeon's wrist movements are precisely replicated by da Vinci instrument tips, allowing complete freedom of movement.  This is a major leap beyond the limitations of standard laparsocopic instruments.  This advance becomes clear to any surgeon immediately when delicate dissection or suturing is required.

Real-time imaging , ultrasound in the image to the right, can be viewed by the surgeon alongside the surgical field to help in evaluation of complex anatomy.  During the partial nephrectomy seen here, ultrasound was used to assess tumor depth, assisting with tumor excision and allowing maximal preservation of normal kidney tissue.
